Charleston Cycle Chic Fashion Show at the Bicycle BrewHaha (Photos)

Last night we had our very first Charleston Cycle Chic fashion show at the Bicycle Brewhaha – celebrating progress we’ve made toward making Charleston more bike-friendly. Hundreds of people showed up on a beautiful Charleston night as the sun set over the Harbor and a breeze blew off the water. We imbibed, we ate, we danced, we played, we bike-poloed and we rode the runway.

In Charleston, Cycle Chic is not only about pretty people on pretty bikes, it’s about being joyful, exuberant YOU on two wheels. So here some photos from our event last night (and we are kicking ourselves for not doing a video!) Thanks to all our amazing participants! The song in this slideshow is one we discovered in creating a soundtrack for the show. Kudos out to Coco Love Alcorn for her fun and cheeky song “I Got a Bicycle”.

Riding with Kids – The Dutch Do it Right

With a new niece added to the family and several friends who are pregnant and love to bicycle, I’ve been taking a look at the different options out there for carting baby around! While here in America, it seems everyone goes first for the seat on the back of the bike (is it safer?), the Dutch go for the front of the bike seat, which I think I would do too. So here’s a great example of BOTH from the blog Dutch City Bike. How great is this? If you want to know where to get a front baby seat, this company, Bobike, has some adorable ones.

A Bicycle Built for Two

Cycle Chic isn’t always about pretty bikes and pretty people. Cycle Chic is about being on a bicycle, connecting with your environment, moving your body and joy. Now doesn’t this photo represent all of that? We’ve seen this parti-colored tandem bike around town, but only met it in person last Saturday during a Lowcountry Local First urban garden agricultural bicycle tour. The little boy is CJ the Master Gardener, and he was more than happy to show us his lemon verbena, mint, rosemary and tomatoes. Love it.

Beach Cruisin’ Beauty

A reader sent in these photos after a group of her girlfriends and even a few of the husbands put this beach cruiser together as a birthday/moving away gift for her sister. Knowing full well you just can’t live on or near the beach without a chic beach cruiser that makes you happy, I think they did a fantastic job don’t you? A little creativity and a light-hearted spirit goes a long way.

Yes, we are loving this hunny bunny. PUBLIC is a soon-to-launch urban bicycle and gear company, based in San Francisco’s SoMa district. They contacted us to let everyone know about a contest they have going on to win a bike – so why not give it a whirl!?? Entrants must answer the question, “In your own words, if we came to your hometown for a one-hour bike ride, where would you take us and what would we do?”

A friend sent me a link to an article on CNN today…..The headline caught my eye immediately . Of course I thought how very Cycle Chic! Here it is….

Biking 150 Miles for a cause — in a dress and heels.

And then I read further. This person who is biking in a dress and heels for a cause? She’s no 20-something who’s been training for a year. She’s no IronMan. She’s a beautiful 84-yr old woman on a single-speed purple vintage cruiser. It makes me think that when we THINK we can’t do something – when we THINK that something is hard or it will take too long or it’s just inconvenient – that really it’s all a bunch of poppycock. The ability to do and to dream is nestled right inside our head and our hearts. It’s up to us to see it differently.

Beach Chic Bike

A reader of Charleston Cycle Chic sent this beautiful photo in of her beach bike! I love the story behind this – her husband pulled it from the neighbors trash and fixed it up for her! It goes to show you with just a little ‘umph’ you can turn someone else’s throw away into your very own little gem. Check out all the daisies…Did you know they are a symbol of childhood innocence? Perfect.
