A Bicycle Built for Two

Cycle Chic isn’t always about pretty bikes and pretty people.  Cycle Chic is about being on a bicycle, connecting with your environment, moving your body and joy.  Now doesn’t this photo represent all of that?  We’ve seen this parti-colored tandem bike around town, but only met it in person last Saturday during a Lowcountry Local First urban garden agricultural bicycle tour.   The little boy is CJ the Master Gardener, and he was more than happy to show us his lemon verbena, mint, rosemary and tomatoes. Love it.

Beach Cruisin’ Beauty

A reader sent in these photos after a group of her girlfriends and even a few of the husbands put this beach cruiser together as a birthday/moving away gift for her sister.  Knowing full well you just can’t live on or near the beach without a chic beach cruiser that makes you happy, I think they did a fantastic job don’t you?  A little creativity and a light-hearted spirit goes a long way.

Hope to see you around town Sherry!!

Cycle Chic Around the World – Including Charleston!

Check out this great video montage from Streetfilms.  We are honored to have been included! Apologies for not being able to post it here – but this blog platform won’t accept flash. Urgh!

Let Your Inner Bike Goddess Shine

We found this post somewhere online and just loved it.  It’s about casting away fear and doubt and letting your inner bike goddess shine.  Thanks to Cecily Cycle Chic for this!

Take me there!

Excerpt:

“The wind caught the hem of my dress as I sped downhill, but I didn’t care. The breeze felt like a chilly kiss on my bare knees, and the sensation made me sit a little straighter on my bike seat. My head was high, my chin pointed defiantly forward as I pushed up and coasted down hills on my way into the office.”

Want. This. Dress.

Salivating…who wants to make one?  Maybe start a line of bicycle dresses made of vintage fabrics?  Thanks Urban Weeds in Portland for catching this loveliness.

Mom and Daughter Cycle Chic – matching bikes!

I was lucky enough to catch this adorable twosome on a bike ride yesterday.  Check out their matching bikes and baskets with Betty Basket Liners.

Win This Totally Chic Bike – Contest ends April 12

Yes, we are loving this hunny bunny. PUBLIC is a soon-to-launch urban bicycle and gear company, based in San Francisco’s SoMa district. They contacted us to let everyone know about a contest they have going on to win a bike – so why not give it a whirl!?? Entrants must answer the question, “In your own words, if we came to your hometown for a one-hour bike ride, where would you take us and what would we do?”

Check out these gorgeous town bikes and the contest here.

Why do you ride?

Thanks to @heidiswift on Twitter for calling my attention to this great video by People for Bikes.  It reminds the writer of this post, how the other night around 6:30PM I rode my bicycle (basket and fenders and light – check!) through the streets of Downtown Charleston in the diminishing light.  I caught the scent of a sizzling steak as I rode by South End Brewery, then the heady perfume of some incredible dish that the Barbados Room was cooking up, and then as I passed by 82 Queen, the aromas of shrimp and grits fled to my nose.  Now some of you might not like those smells of the city humming, but I do.  I love having every one of my senses alive and fulfilled when I am on a bike.  That’s why I ride.

Why do you ride?

Yes, Utility and Creativity are in fact, Cycle Chic

I know that most of you out there thinking about Cycle Chic might assume that expensive bikes with expensive clothes makes Cycle Chic go round.  But if you’ve been reading up, you know that this Cycle Chic-er loves all things that show a zest for life, so I had to include what you see below….

This picture was sent in to me by a reader, and let me tell you, I love it.  It’s old school, new school and being-one-with-nature-school all in one.   This is his ‘fishing bike’ and he and his 7-yr old daughter like to ride to the shore of the Wando river and try to catch anything they can.

Lowcountry Livin'

Ladies and Gents, you don’t have to buy a fancy basket to get things done.  Get creative in the spur of the moment.  Try a tomato box strapped to the back if you can’t hold on to all your organic farmer’s market supplies.   Or rummage up an old Coke Bottle container like this gentleman did to hold your fresh caught dinner as you ride back home smiling with your kids and feel good about being alive.

Charleston makes the Cycle Chic Worldwide Map

This great google map was put together by our Cycle Chic cohorts at Bike by the Sea in Santa Barbara.  Isn’t it neat to think that 10s of 1000s of us are Cycling Chic all over the world, and that our marvelous little town on the Atlantic is part of it??  Pretty amazing…
